The Paris Dakar Rally is this year the Argentina Chile 2009 Dakar Rally! With all of the problems that were occurring in Africa, the organizers decided to move it to South America, more specifically to Argentina and Chile.
Starting out in Buenos Aires, the drivers will traverse to the south to Santa Rosa and then onto Puerto Madryn, then turn west to Jacobacci then north to Neuquen, onto San Rafael and Mendoza before heading west across the border into Valparaiso Chile, north to the Atacama Desert, and then back east to La Rioja and Cordoba before ending January 17 back where they started in Buenos Aires.
It's such a great opportunity to at least check them out when they return to Buenos Aires whether you live in Buenos Aires or will simply be visiting.

....with all the problems that were occurring in Africa...how about all the problems Dakar causes in Africa. Bringing the race here also means bringing those problems too! This race is absolutely absurd. The local government has been promoting it giving money to the Dakar, saying it will be so good for tourism since people will see images of beautiful Patagonia...ironically in the process hundreds of cars race through "nature" destroying the land and in particular land owned by farmers and indigenous people, that no one really cares about anyway. The Dakar was a disaster in Africa, so why bring it here? The media should publish the many deaths Dakar cause, including kids and the environmental disaster it causes. Please people, inform yourselves properly, the Dakar is not all that.
