Cirque de Soleil in Buenos Aires support Circo Social de Sur

This is from another expat  so read everything and buy tickets from her first unless she's sold out! It's a great opportunity to do good while enjoying a great performance.
Dear Friends,
As many of you know Cirque de Soleil is in town! Cirque de Soleil donated 80 tickets  to an organization, Circo Social de Sur, who hosts circus workshops for the poorest children of Buenos Aires. I know them well because they host a circus workshop at Centro Conviven who I work closely with. They're really amazing and the children love jumping on the trampoline and flying in the air with the trapeze! All proceeds from the sale of the tickets will go to buying new circus equipment, net, trampoline, paying professional staff and transportation costs associated with transporting the children from there homes to the workshops. Here's your chance to
go to an AMAZING show AND do good by buying your tickets from us! Below is the actual invitation. I have the tickets in hand so please let me know if you are interested and I will reserve your spot.

Ticket Details:
When: Friday, July 18 at 17hrs (i know its early but its a holiday weekend so work is not an excuse!)
Cost: $400 pesos for VIP Platea Section 201 (If you purchase through Ticketek they are $380 plus a $30 service charge...so its less if you buy from us!)

How: Please contact me directly, not the email below....

New York Times expat writer Maxine Swann on Buenos Aires

The New York Times is talking about Buenos Aires again...this time with a story written by American expat Maxine Swann...

At Home Abroad

Crisis and Renewal

João Pina for The New York Times

WITH A VIEW When Maxine Swann, an American writer, moved to Buenos Aires in 2001, her first apartment overlooked the Plaza Las Heras, once a prison and now a park.

Published: June 19, 2008

“I’M sad that you see Argentina like this,” Pola Oloixarac, my new Argentine friend, said one night in November 2003 as we passed a cluster of figures picking through heaps of garbage bags on the otherwise deserted streets downtown. “It’s because of the crisis, you know.” She was referring to the economic crisis of 2001, the most dramatic societal upheaval in over a decade in a country prone to such upheavals.

“But soon you’ll see,” she added. “Everything will get more and more beautiful.”

I moved to Buenos Aires in April 2001, a few months before the crash, after my Argentine husband, Juan Pablo, received an offer to write a series for Argentine television. I was 32 and had just signed a contract to write my first novel. read the full article here

A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE APARTMENT

It was my home for several years, and since 2003 Im renting it fully furnished to people looking for an inside look of the city, not a made-for-tourists fake facade.

I was really lucky since the begining: my first tenants were great people. First, Danny Palmerlee
(well known Lonely Planet´s guides Editor). He lived in my place for over a year during the process of writing Best of Buenos Aires, a book now available at Amazon.

Then arrived Nadya S
, NYU law student who not only was amazing to meet, also she quickly became my friend, and so far Nad is the most ironic, clever and funny English speaking I´ve met (despite the fact she wants to be a lawyer, I know). She fell in love with the place.

World of Reading - multi language resource - Spanish, French, and lots more

If you are looking for an excellent range of language learning resources then be sure to check out the World of Reading website. There are a huge range of language materials for expatriates or anyone who is looking to learn Spanish in preparation for heading to Argentina as well as homeschoolers and unschoolers.  Cindy, who owns the company, spends a lot of time choosing books, cd's, dvd's and other resources rather than simply having a variety of mediocre products.

Starbucks officially opens at Alto Palermo Mall, Buenos Aires

Are you heading to Buenos Aires (or already there) and looking for a Starbucks quick fix? Look no further. After a long anticipated wait, Starbucks has opened it's first location in Argentina in the Alto Palermo shopping center. Their menu might look just a bit different than usual as they have thought about local preferences and customs to make some additions such as a dulce de leche Frappacino and also a mate latte drink. They are also using local businesses to supply some of their accompaniments to their beverages - the amazing cookies and brownies are coming from the expat owned, local bakery, Sugar and Spice.

The Starbucks at Alto Palermo Shopping Mall can be accessed by subte at the Bulnes Línea D and is at Santa Fe 3253. Or for more information including  collectivos and a map go here

Looking for amazing chocolate chip cookies in Buenos Aires?

American Airlines cutting flights from Chicago to Buenos Aires

American Airlines announced another round of flight cuts and this time it includes Chicago to Buenos Aires flights. It's still a great deal in Buenos Aires though where even though the flights are still high, the dollar still goes a long way.

from the Chicago Sun Times:

American cuts Buenos Aires-, Honolulu-Chicago flights

American cuts Buenos Aires-, Honolulu-Chicago flights

AMR Corp.'s American Airlines will drop flights between Chicago and Buenos Aires and Chicago and Honolulu, among the first steps in a plan announced last week to cut U.S. capacity by as much as 12 percent.

The company's American Eagle regional airline also will retire its fleet of 35 Saab 340 turboprop aircraft by the end of this year, AMR said in a statement today. Those planes are in addition to as many as 85 jets AMR will stop using to help reduce capacity at American Airlines and American Eagle.

Oleada Holistic Wellness Center begins with Juice Saturdays

A very good friend, along with two partners, has created Oleada, a holistic wellness center
in Palermo Hollywood.  Oleada will be an all encompassing holistic center
focused on the health of the whole person - mind, body & spirit wellness.
The center will include juice bar & natural café; yoga, meditation, and
special classes; spa & alternative treatment center; tea salon, Zen garden,
and retail of holistic wellness products. It should be opened by early next
year on Humboldt in Palermo Hollywood.

They have started serving natural Juices and light lunch plates on Saturday
afternoons at their home office in Las Canitas.  The objective of these Juice
Saturdays is to test prototype juices and wheat grass drinks and get
feedback from the community.  They want to hear what customers are looking for
in a holistic center.

Anyone interested in learning more can email them at info@oleada. com.ar.

Please give your support to these ladies on this awesome project!

Where to buy baby carriers / slings / wraps in Buenos Aires

For all my fellow baby wearing mamas out there, I've got the perfect place for you to buy your carriers in Buenos Aires, particularly wraps and asian style carriers. Check out Alejandra Martinez's website Maminia or contact her directly about buying carriers. She also carries nursing wear.

Another great website a bit further out (Ecuador) is Familialibre. It's in both English and Spanish and has great articles as carriers and other great baby/mama items.

Check out both sites if you're a baby wearer.

Today Show Where in the World is Matt Lauer - in Buenos Aires, Argentina !

Buenos Aires, Argentina continues to be one of the top ranked tourist destinations where the dollar still buys a lot. Today Show host Matt Lauer as part of his "Where in the World is Matt Lauer", visited Buenos Aires, Argentina and did a series of segments about the city and mentions other areas of the country as well.

While it might not be the absolute bargain it was just a couple of years ago, particularly with the rising cost of flights, it is still much more friendly to the dollar than Europe. Here is the link to the MSNBC webpage .
